Traffic Cops from South Yorkshire Police are reminding people to โstay home and save livesโ after reports of drivers travelling at excessive speeds on the countyโs roads amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The statement comes after traffic officers attended two serious collisions in the last 24 hours in which speed is believed to have been a contributing factor.
Inspector Jason Booth of the Roads Policing Group said that anyone found to be breaking the law was risking placing unnecessary strain on the emergency services and would be dealt with.
โPlease stay at home and off the roads unless you absolutely have to travel.
โFor anyone thinking of using our roads illegally, you are not only risking lives but you are using valuable police or NHS resources by committing dangerous offences.
โYour actions could have fatal consequences so please do your bit and stay home to protect the emergency services and let us focus on those who need our help.โ
โThe speed limits are there for a reason, no matter how many cars or vehicles are on the road.
The government has said people should only leave their homes for the following reasons:
- shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible;
- one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle โ alone or with members of your household;
- any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person;
- travelling to and from work, but only where you cannot work from home.
