Police issue drink & drug driving warning ahead of festive season

by Admin

As the countdown to Christmas begins and festive celebrations get underway, South Yorkshire Police are reminding drivers of their zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving.

As December begins, police will be focusing on those who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs with anyone who tests positive left facing charges and appearing in court within 24 hours.

Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings emphasised the importance of making the right choice this season: โ€œThe greatest gift you can give this Christmas is to protect yourself and others. No one sets out on a journey expecting not to make it home, to work, or to see friends. Sadly, weโ€™ve already witnessed too many lives lost on South Yorkshireโ€™s roads this year. Our priority is ensuring everyone makes it back to their families safely this Christmas.

โ€œWe know the majority of drivers do the right thing by avoiding alcohol and drugs before driving, and weโ€™re grateful for your role in keeping our roads safe. However, to the small number who still take the risk, we askโ€”is it really worth it?*

โ€œThink about the consequences. You could lose your job, your family, or even take a lifeโ€”whether your own or someone elseโ€™s.โ€

South Yorkshire Policeโ€™s enforcement activity will run alongside an awareness campaign in partnership with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP).

During December 2022, officers stopped over 1,000 vehicles and carried out more than 900 breath tests. Out of those, 119 drivers tested positive, refused testing, or failed.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs carries serious penalties, including a driving ban, unlimited fines, or a prison sentence. Worse still, it could lead to a serious or fatal collision.

Inspector Collings added: โ€œMake a plan before you head outโ€”if youโ€™re planning to drink, arrange a taxi, use public transport, or walk home if itโ€™s safe to do so. Leave your car at home to avoid any temptation.

โ€œOur officers will be out in force, day and night, carrying out checks and targeted enforcement activities.

โ€œWe wish everyone in South Yorkshire a safe and happy Christmas.โ€
