As the countdown to Christmas begins and festive celebrations get underway, South Yorkshire Police are reminding drivers of their zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving.
As December begins, police will be focusing on those who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs with anyone who tests positive left facing charges and appearing in court within 24 hours.
Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings emphasised the importance of making the right choice this season: โThe greatest gift you can give this Christmas is to protect yourself and others. No one sets out on a journey expecting not to make it home, to work, or to see friends. Sadly, weโve already witnessed too many lives lost on South Yorkshireโs roads this year. Our priority is ensuring everyone makes it back to their families safely this Christmas.
โWe know the majority of drivers do the right thing by avoiding alcohol and drugs before driving, and weโre grateful for your role in keeping our roads safe. However, to the small number who still take the risk, we askโis it really worth it?*
โThink about the consequences. You could lose your job, your family, or even take a lifeโwhether your own or someone elseโs.โ
South Yorkshire Policeโs enforcement activity will run alongside an awareness campaign in partnership with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP).
During December 2022, officers stopped over 1,000 vehicles and carried out more than 900 breath tests. Out of those, 119 drivers tested positive, refused testing, or failed.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs carries serious penalties, including a driving ban, unlimited fines, or a prison sentence. Worse still, it could lead to a serious or fatal collision.
Inspector Collings added: โMake a plan before you head outโif youโre planning to drink, arrange a taxi, use public transport, or walk home if itโs safe to do so. Leave your car at home to avoid any temptation.
โOur officers will be out in force, day and night, carrying out checks and targeted enforcement activities.
โWe wish everyone in South Yorkshire a safe and happy Christmas.โ
