The newly constructed 800-metre road connecting Aldwarke Lane with Stonerow Way and Stadium Way offers an additional access route to Parkgate Shopping.
Featuring a roundabout located between the two railway bridges, this road aims to alleviate congestion on the A633 near Parkgate Shopping, enhance traffic flow, and improve bus journey times along the corridor and the broader road network.
Rotherham Council said “The timing of the opening means that shoppers visiting Parkgate in the run up to the busy festive season will benefit from eased traffic in the area, as well as more reliable bus services.”
Work on site commenced in March 2023 with a programme completion date of February 2024. During the course of the works various issues with earthworks, drainage, design changes and statutory undertakers’ occurred and resulted in an increase to £11.478m.
The scheme not only enhances the infrastructure for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists but also includes a new 300-space Park & Ride facility at the Parkgate Tram Train terminus, complete with electric vehicle charging bays.
The majority of funding is coming from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) £166million Transforming Cities Fund.
