On Saturday (6 September 2023), police responded to a road traffic collison on Bawtry Road at Brinsworth where they found John Duckworth (46) slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle and unable to speak clearly.

He was breathalysed and blew a sample of 180, with the legal limit for alcohol being 35.

Officers discovered John was couldn’t articulate a sentence when officers attended Bawtry Road in Brinsworth due to being nearly four times over the alcohol limit.

Appearing at Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing on Wednesday (10 April), the courtroom heard how Duckworth of Harmony Way, Catcliffe had failed to stop at the junction of Bawtry Road and Pavillion Lane and how his actions led to a three-car collision, with three people, including an elderly woman, suffering serious injuries.

Duckworth, who was uninjured following the collision, was spoken to by officers at the scene and witnessed to be slurring his words, unable to speak clearly and slumped over the steering wheel.

He pleading guilty and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Roads Policing Officer PC James Ball said: “This incident highlights the dangers of people getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs.

“People were seriously injured because of Duckworth’s selfish actions, which could have had fatal consequences.

“We are currently in week two of the Fatal 4 campaign, raising awareness of the dangers of the biggest contributing factors to fatalities and those seriously injured on our roads; speeding, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, mobile phone use and failing to wear a seatbelt.

“Hopefully Duckworth’s consequences for his actions can act as a deterrent to other drivers. It isn’t worth the risk. You could kill someone, lose your job, family and friends.”
