Proposals have been submitted for a new £6.65m tram-train station to be located at Magna Science Adventure Centre
Network Rail has applied for planning permission from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council for the station, situated on the northern side of the current Magna car park.
The intended station comprises two platforms designed to accommodate a single tram-train unit. Access to the station would be directly from the existing Magna complex car park.
Expected amenities include a shelter, informational displays, lighting, CCTV surveillance, and designated space for bicycle parking.
The redesign of the current car park aims to increase its capacity to 399 spaces, along with the provision of dedicated cycle parking, totaling 21 spaces.
The plans highlight that the current car park operates at about 4% capacity, indicating significant room to introduce tram passenger parking without impacting the parking experience for Magna patrons using the existing facilities.
This development aims to support Magna’s expansion in hosting events and foster the growth of its nighttime activities.
Network Rail said “The Tram-Train line runs to the rear of the site; therefore, an opportunity has been identified to build a new stop serving Magna and the wider area. This would improve connectivity and provide additional transport options for accessing Magna and the wider Templeborough/ Sheffield Road area from both Sheffield and Rotherham.”
“Alongside helping to provide growth to Magna and the local area, the new stop also supports Rotherham Council’s aspirations for increased investment in the regeneration of the wider Templeborough area and provide access to areas of opportunities from areas of need”
