Man (24) charged after hit and run in Brinsworth leaving boy (15) critically injured

Police have charged a man (24) after he hit a 15-year-old pedestrian with a stolen car and failing to stop at the scene in Brinsworth on Friday.

At around 11.00pm on Friday 19 April it was reported that a silver BMW was travelling along Brinsworth Lane at high speed.

The car passed the junction with Poplar Drive heading towards Brinsworth Road before colliding with 15-year-old Ryan Durkin.

A black Seat Ibiza also travelling along Brinsworth Lane then collided with Ryan who was in the road.ย 

Ryan was taken by road ambulance to hospital where he currently remains in a critical condition. His family are being supported by specially trained officers and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this very difficult time.ย 

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said โ€œMitchell Hughes (24) of no fixed address has today been charged with Causing a Serious Injury Through Dangerous Driving and Failing to Stop After a Road Traffic Collision.โ€

โ€œHe has also been charged with Aggravated Burglary, Possession of an Offensive Weapon and Section 18 Wounding, which relate to a previous incident on Friday 12 April, when the vehicle involved in the fail to stop on 19 April was stolen.โ€

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Berry, in charge of the investigation said: โ€œThis is a shocking incident that I know has been deeply upsetting not only for Ryanโ€™s family and friends but also those who live in the area around Brinsworth Road, and in the wider community.ย 

โ€œRyanโ€™s loved ones are devastated, this is a situation nobody wants somebody they care about to be in.

โ€œI am pleased that we have been able to identify, arrest and charge Mitchell Hughes, but our investigation doesnโ€™t stop there.

โ€œIf you have any information that may help our enquires, I urge you to please come forward and help us give Ryanโ€™s family the answers they need.
