Is this Rotherham’s most dangerous road YET as it’s described as “accident waiting to happen”

A newly implemented road layout which requires motorists to use the cycle lane has come under fire from local businesses and motorists

The controversial design requires drivers to enter the cycle lane when oncoming traffic approaches, a move that causes concern over both driver and cyclist safety.

The development is Phase 3 of Rotherham Council’s Cycling Path Scheme, aimed at improving conditions for walking and cycling between Westgate and the A6178 Sheffield Road.

Sheffield Road will incorporate 2 metre-wide advisory cycle lanes on either side with a single carriageway down the middle.

One driver who works near the new scheme said “I drive on there nearly every day as I work off Westgate. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Rotherham Council said “This will provide space for motor vehicles to pass using the full width of the road when required whilst indicating to drivers the distance with which they should pass cyclists.”

The Rotherham to Tinsley scheme is to be delivered by Rotherham Council with money secured from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
