Work has officially started on the £7 million Whiston Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme, a major project designed to reduce the risk of flooding and better protect homes, businesses and roads across Whiston
The scheme is being delivered by Rotherham Council in partnership with the Environment Agency and aims to provide a long-term solution to flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
During periods of intense rain, water levels in Whiston Brook can rise rapidly, placing nearby properties, businesses and local infrastructure at increased risk. The new scheme will improve the way water moves through the area while increasing the capacity of the drainage network.
Key elements of the project include improvements to sections of the brook that currently pass through culverts beneath roads, along with the creation of a new flood storage area on nearby land. During heavy rainfall, excess water will be temporarily stored before being released at a controlled rate once water levels have fallen.
By slowing the flow of water and easing pressure on existing drainage infrastructure, the project is expected to significantly reduce flood risk during future storm events.
Councillor Lynda Marshall, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Waste Services, Leisure and Green Spaces, said: “We know the impact flooding has had in Whiston and how disruptive it can be when water levels rise quickly during heavy rain.
“This scheme is an important step in reducing that risk and helping to protect the village in the future. By investing in long-term flood management, we are improving how water is handled across the area and helping to safeguard homes, businesses and local roads.
“We will continue to keep residents informed as the work progresses and will do everything we can to minimise disruption while this important project is delivered.”

Construction is being carried out by Esh Construction and is expected to continue from summer 2026 through to spring 2027.
The work will be carried out in phases across several locations in Whiston, with temporary road closures required to ensure the safety of both workers and the public.
The planned schedule includes:
- Worrygoose Lane (from Cow Rakes Lane to Greystones Road): Monday 6 July to Friday 2 October
- Little Common Lane/Royds Moor Hill: Monday 6 July to Friday 2 October
- Moorhouse Lane: Monday 5 October to Friday 30 October
