A 45-year-old man has been charged in connection with a burglary at the Rotherham Hospice Donation Centre
The break-in happened overnight between Wednesday 8 July and Thursday 9 July at the charity’s Donation Centre on Rawmarsh Road, where offenders forced entry before stealing a donation tin and several electrical items.
Following ongoing enquiries, South Yorkshire Police have now confirmed that a man has been charged in connection with the incident.
Michael Brailsford, 45, of Queen Street, Rotherham, has been charged with burglary.
He was arrested by officers on Wednesday (16 July) and has since been remanded in custody. Brailsford is due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court today (Friday 17 July).
The burglary caused damage to the donation centre, with Rotherham Hospice previously describing the incident as a blow to the charity, which relies heavily on community support to fund specialist end-of-life and palliative care for adults across the borough.
At the time, the hospice said repair costs would take money away from frontline patient care and described staff and volunteers as being “shaken and angry” after discovering the break-in.
The Donation Centre has remained open throughout the investigation, continuing to accept donations while repairs are carried out.
Police enquiries into the incident have been ongoing since the burglary was reported on 9 July.
