A body has been discovered following a search for a missing woman that saw a police helicopter deployed over the area
Officers from South Yorkshire Police received a report of concern for a woman in her 30s on Monday (March 2) and began searching the Wingfield area of Rotherham.
Residents reported seeing a police helicopter circling above homes as part of the operation, with crews from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) assisting ground officers.
At 12.07am this morning (March 3), a body was discovered in a wooded area near Town Lane.
A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment in connection with the investigation. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “While formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be the missing woman. Her family has been informed and is being supported by officers.
“An investigation has been launched into the woman’s death, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Enquiries are ongoing in the local area and a scene remains in place.
“In line with normal procedure, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to police contact prior to the woman’s death.”
A spokesperson for NPAS added: “Around 5.30pm on Monday March 2 a police helicopter crew from NPAS Carr Gate was deployed to the area of Rotherham in support of South Yorkshire Police.
