Police are investigating reports of a grave being disturbed at the churchyard connected to All Saints Church, which has led to a visible police presence in the area
Officers have confirmed they are treating the incident as a reported crime relating to one specific grave within the churchyard. The next-of-kin of the deceased have been informed and are being supported by specially trained Family Liaison Officers.
The churchyard is currently closed to members of the public while initial enquiries are carried out. Police have said it will be reopened once those enquiries are complete.
In a statement, South Yorkshire Police acknowledged that the incident may be distressing for those with loved ones buried at the site. Officers have reassured the community that they currently believe this was a targeted incident and that there is no threat to other graves within the churchyard.
For community reassurance, visible police patrols will remain in the local area over the coming days.
