More than £2.7 million in additional funding is set to be committed to road repairs across Rotherham, as councillors prepare to meet next week to finalise the Council’s Budget
The proposed investment includes over £2 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, alongside £729,000 in additional Council funding made possible through the Government’s improved national funding settlement announced on 9 February. If approved at the Council meeting on Wednesday 4 March, the funding will represent nearly a 30% increase in roads investment compared to previous allocations.
The additional funding will support highway maintenance works across the borough, including repairing potholes, resurfacing worn road surfaces and maintaining key infrastructure. The aim is to improve safety and deliver smoother, more reliable journeys for all road users.
The new allocation brings Rotherham Council’s total planned spend on road maintenance, repairs and highway structure improvements to over £12 million.
This follows a further £4.4 million highways investment package agreed by Cabinet earlier this month. That funding will contribute to repairs to the parapet at Old Flatts Bridge, the development of reconstruction plans for Fleet Bridge, road safety schemes across all wards and a range of additional minor works.
Leader of the Council, Chris Read, said: “We’ve all seen how the recent wet weather has caused havoc with roads not just in Rotherham, but right across the country so it’s great to be able to direct this additional funding to support more road resurfacing over the coming year.
“Earlier this year, the Government said Rotherham’s road maintenance approach was one of the best in the country, but we’re well aware that there is still plenty more to be done. We welcome the improved level of government funding and we’re determined to put it to good use.”
Full details of the proposals will be considered by councillors at the Council Meeting on Wednesday 4 March as part of the authority’s 2026/27 Budget.
