A ‘heavily intoxicated’ driver spent Christmas Day in custody after crashing into a telegraph pole and punching a police officer
In the early hours of Christmas Day (25 December), at approximately 4.30am, police received multiple reports of a vehicle colliding with a telegraph pole in the East Dene area of Rotherham.
A dog handler attended the incident on Brook Road, where the driver, a man in his 30s, became obstructive and was suspected to be heavily intoxicated. Officers were required to physically remove the man from the vehicle.
While being escorted to the rear of a police car, the driver punched an officer in the face. As his behaviour became increasingly unco-operative and violent, a police dog was deployed and detained the man by his arm.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit and assaulting an emergency service worker. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.
