Two people in their 20s have been killed after their car veered off the M1 and crashed into a tree
At 11.36pm last night (12 November), emergency services were called to reports of a collision on the M1 southbound between junctions 37 and 36.
It is believed that a dark grey BMW saloon was travelling along the motorway when it left the carriageway and collided with a tree.
Despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the driver, a man in his 20s, and his passenger, a woman in her 20s, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Their families are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers, and our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the vehicle prior to the collision or who may have dashcam footage that could assist enquiries. If you believe you can help, get in touch online, via live chat, or by calling 101 quoting incident number 1119 of 12 November 2025.
