Driver Jailed After Motorcyclist Loses Leg in Catcliffe Car Meet Crash

A driver who collided with a motorcyclist and ploughed into a crowd during a car meet, before leaving the scene has been jailed for over three years

Jack Wasteney, 25, from Worksop, Nottinghamshire, travelled to Catcliffe in January 2023 to take part in a car meet on Seldon Way. During the event, he drove his Volkswagen Golf dangerously and at high speeds, resulting in a devastating collision.

Wasteney’s reckless driving caused him to crash into a motorcyclist, launching the rider into the air and leaving him with catastrophic injuries. As the motorcyclist was thrown down the road, his bike and debris also struck two pedestrians, seriously injuring them.

Instead of stopping to help, Wasteney fled the scene, leaving bystanders to call emergency services.

The motorcyclist was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where doctors were forced to amputate one of his legs due to the severity of his injuries. The two pedestrians also required hospital treatment.

Speaking after the sentencing, Serious Collisions Unit Sergeant John Taylor said: “We understand that drivers want to meet and showcase their cars, but this must be done in a safe and controlled manner.

Using the roads as a racing track will not be tolerated across South Yorkshire. This collision is exactly why we take a zero-tolerance approach. Our priority is road safety and protecting people from harm.”

Wasteney appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on 31 August, where the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, sentenced him to three years and three months in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for five years and seven months.

Sgt Taylor added: “No prison sentence can undo what has happened to the victim, who now faces life with the loss of his limb. But we hope this sends a clear message to anyone engaging in dangerous driving at car meets – your actions have consequences.

We are willing to work alongside those who organise safe and legal events, but we will not tolerate anyone putting lives at risk. We will close roads, seize vehicles, and take action where necessary.”
