Rotherham Hospice is celebrating a historic achievement after receiving an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) — the highest accolade possible for health and social care providers in England
This marks the first time in the hospice’s history that it has been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ overall rating, signifying a major milestone not only for the organisation, but for the wider Rotherham community it serves.
The CQC commended Rotherham Hospice for excellence in two key areas — ‘Well-led’ and ‘Caring’ — reflecting the core principles of the hospice’s 2024–2030 strategy, ‘Living Life’s Wishes’, which focuses on personalised care, inclusivity, and empowering staff.
The CQC praised the hospice’s leadership for fostering a culture of continuous improvement, openness, and accountability, where staff feel supported and empowered to deliver exceptional care. In its report, the Commission also highlighted the hospice’s unique ability to treat every person with dignity, kindness, and genuine compassion — hallmarks of its approach to end-of-life care.
Chief Executive Mat Cottle-Shaw described the rating as a proud and humbling moment. “To be rated as ‘Outstanding’ for the first time in our history is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our entire hospice family; staff, volunteers, and supporters. Achieving this during my first inspection as CEO fills me with immense pride and gratitude.
I want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who contributes to the hospice, from those who deliver care at the bedside to the supporters and volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. This ‘Outstanding’ rating belongs to you all. It’s proof that our commitment to truly listening, empowering choice, and ensuring dignity in every moment is not just words on a page; it’s lived every single day because of your kindness, compassion, and unwavering support.”
