A new 289-space free-to-use Park and Ride for Tram Train passengers has been opened next to Parkgate Shopping
The development, which supports the Parkgate Tram Train service, includes 14 electric vehicle chargers, cycle racks, disabled access spaces, and dedicated motorcycle parking.
The ยฃ12.9 million project has been delivered by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Rotherham Council, site owners Stadium, and contractor Tilbury Douglas. It forms part of a broader initiative to enhance walking, cycling and public transport connections across South Yorkshire, backed by the UK Governmentโs ยฃ166 million Transforming Cities Fund.
The Park and Ride follows the completion of a new link road opened on 6 December last year, designed to improve access to the shopping centre and relieve congestion on nearby roads including the A633 and A6123.
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard welcomed the development as another step toward building a better transport network for the region. โSouth Yorkshire deserves nothing less than a world-class public transport network so our communities can access the jobs and opportunities they deserve,โ he said.

Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council, described the facility as a โreal win for Rotherhamโ.
โWhether youโre hopping on the Tram Train, cycling to the shops, or charging an EV, this investment helps us cut congestion, reduce emissions, and build a better-connected future for our town,โ he said. โItโs not just about Parkgate โ itโs about improving journeys across Rotherham and beyond.โ
The Parkgate Park and Ride received ยฃ11.5 million from the Transforming Cities Fund and is expected to ease pressure on traffic in Parkgate and Rawmarsh, improve local bus journey times, and support a shift to more sustainable travel.
