A team of Rotherham police officers has been praised for their quick and compassionate response after helping a distressed man in Herringthorpe on Sunday evening
At 6.39pm on Sunday (11 May), officers responded to reports that a man in the Herringthorpe area who was in a mental health crisis.
Sergeant Nick Gore, and PCs Jessica Clayton, Josh Brown and Oliver Cotton attended and found a 50-year-old man in distress and at risk of harming himself.
Officers patiently spoke with the man, working alongside South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to prioritise the safety of the man in crisis and the wider public.
The man was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act โ an emergency police power used for people who are believed to be suffering a mental health crisis in a public place and need immediate help.
Rotherham Response Chief Inspector James Bennett said: โI am very proud of the work of Sgt Gore and PCs Clayton, Brown and Cotton in working calmly under incredible pressure to resolve a situation that could have had a very different ending.
โThey worked in tandem with SYFR, showing incredible interoperability skills, and ensured that the man in crisis was brought safely to hospital.
