South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the M1 near Barnsley.
At approximately 9:23am on Thursday 1 May 2025, emergency services were called to reports of a serious collision on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between Junctions 36 and 37. It is understood that a grey Volvo XC40 collided with the central reservation before leaving the carriageway.
Tragically, despite the efforts of emergency responders, a 71-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 71-year-old man was also injured in the collision and was transported to hospital. His injuries are described as serious but not believed to be life-threatening.
The families of both individuals have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.
The motorway was closed in both directions for several hours to allow for investigative and recovery work to be carried out. It has since been reopened.
An investigation is now underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who may possess dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident, to come forward.
