Uncertainty surrounds the future of Rotherham’s Post Office after it was named among 108 branches set to be franchised or potentially closed
The Post Office announced in November that it was seeking to transfer a number of its Crown branches to retail partners or individual postmasters, a move that could see some outlets closed altogether. It has now confirmed that 108 sites will be handed over to franchisees by the autumn – including the Rotherham town centre branch.
While the Post Office has stated that the majority of the affected branches are expected to remain open at their current locations, there are concerns that some could be relocated or closed, resulting in job losses and reduced accessibility to vital services.
Rotherham MP Sarah Champion voiced her disappointment with the decision and its potential impact on local residents.
“I am really disappointed by Post Office Ltd’s announcement that they are moving to a franchised model, placing Rotherham’s Crown Post Office branch in jeopardy,” she said.
“I have written to both the Government and Post Office Ltd and will fight to protect people in Rotherham’s access to essential services.”
Champion highlighted the increasing importance of Post Offices in towns like Rotherham, especially in the wake of widespread bank closures.
“With the majority of businesses having reduced their High Street offerings in recent years, Post Offices have increasingly stepped up, providing a range of services, in particular access to banking, that would otherwise simply not be available,” she said.
“Rotherham itself no longer has a major high street bank. The face-to-face services offered by the Post Office are relied upon by my constituents, especially older people who are less likely to be able to access services online.”
The proposed changes are part of a broader restructuring by Post Office Ltd aimed at reducing costs, but critics argue that the franchising model prioritises profits over community needs.
