Rotherham Council have said ‘warm weather’ is a contributing factor to delays involving ‘Emergency Bridge Repairs’
Over a year ago, on August 10th 2022 a load fell from a HGV and caused damage to the structure of the bridge which runs over the River Don and Railway.
Since this date, restrictions have been in place for motorists including a lane closure and most recently, lane narrowing and speed restrictions
Centenary Way was closed for two nights on 12th October and 13th October 2022
We contacted Rotherham Council for an update on the ‘Emergency Roadworks’
Assistant Director for Regeneration, Planning, and Transport, Simon Moss, said: “The bridge’s central reservation was damaged due a number of contributing factors, including heat expansion of the materials in warm weather and impact from a road vehicle overrunning the central reservation.”
“The initial emergency works entailed the construction of two platforms underneath the bridge to stop any remaining debris from falling, to protect the railway line and both walkers and cyclists on the path next to the River Don.”
“Given the importance of Centenary Way for the circulation of traffic, we have ensured that all lanes on the bridge remain open, with lane narrowing and speed restrictions in place to protect the central reservation slabs from further damage and movement, with weekly inspections taking place.
“Following the investigative phase and the production of a design to reconstruct and strengthen the slabs, further works will need to take place, which will be coordinated with other schemes in the area to minimise further disruption for motorists.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding during this process.”
