Man (24) charged after hit and run in Brinsworth leaving boy (15) critically injured

Police have charged a man (24) after he hit a 15-year-old pedestrian with a stolen car and failing to stop at the scene in Brinsworth on Friday.

At around 11.00pm on Friday 19 April it was reported that a silver BMW was travelling along Brinsworth Lane at high speed.

The car passed the junction with Poplar Drive heading towards Brinsworth Road before colliding with 15-year-old Ryan Durkin.

A black Seat Ibiza also travelling along Brinsworth Lane then collided with Ryan who was in the road. 

Ryan was taken by road ambulance to hospital where he currently remains in a critical condition. His family are being supported by specially trained officers and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this very difficult time. 

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said “Mitchell Hughes (24) of no fixed address has today been charged with Causing a Serious Injury Through Dangerous Driving and Failing to Stop After a Road Traffic Collision.”

“He has also been charged with Aggravated Burglary, Possession of an Offensive Weapon and Section 18 Wounding, which relate to a previous incident on Friday 12 April, when the vehicle involved in the fail to stop on 19 April was stolen.”

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Berry, in charge of the investigation said: “This is a shocking incident that I know has been deeply upsetting not only for Ryan’s family and friends but also those who live in the area around Brinsworth Road, and in the wider community. 

“Ryan’s loved ones are devastated, this is a situation nobody wants somebody they care about to be in.

“I am pleased that we have been able to identify, arrest and charge Mitchell Hughes, but our investigation doesn’t stop there.

“If you have any information that may help our enquires, I urge you to please come forward and help us give Ryan’s family the answers they need.
