South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership are using hi-tech speed cameras that can catch out motorists breaking the law during the dark nights in the run up to Christmas.

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership are using special equipment on-board their mobile camera units.

The Infra-red lighting system has been used for over a year in an attempt to help speed cameras during the dark catching offenders on poorly or unlit roads.

The equipment which includes a series of bulbs are mounted on to the back of mobile camera vans pointing in the direction of the unit’s camera. The lights then illuminate when it detects a speeding vehicle, giving the controller a clear view of the registration plate.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Safer Roads partnership said that : “We’ve had a low light capability for a number of years now, but we took delivery of the latest equipment in February 2017. This equipment uses Infra-Red flood lamps to illuminate the area where we capture images of offending vehicles.”

Mobile safety camera vehicles are be deployed to routes and locations that are identified through personal injury collision data as well as those highlighted by local communities.
